Common Card Assignment Errors
Assigning cards correctly in BluSKY is critical to avoid errors and ensure smooth access control operations. This article explains common issues, their causes, and best practices for preventing them.
Understanding Card Creation and Assignment
Before a card can be assigned to a person in BluSKY, it must first exist in the system where that person’s profile is located. Cards can be created in two main ways:
1. Card Upload File (Preferred Method)
If you purchase cards through BluB0X, we handle the creation process for you.

As part of your order, BluB0X uploads all card data into your system via the Card Upload File process.

Once uploaded, these cards are immediately available to assign—no manual creation is required.
2. Manual Creation via “Create New Card”
Cards can also be created manually during the assignment process.
Only use the Create New Card button when:

The card has not been uploaded via a Card Upload File.

You are adding a completely new card to the system.
When creating a card manually, you must enter:

Card Type
-
External Number
-
Internal Number
-
Facility Code
Common Error: Duplicate Card Creation
Error Message:
More than one card exists with this number and facility code.
Cause:
This occurs when you use the Create New Card button for a card that already exists—most often one that was uploaded via the Card Upload File.
How To Fix:
- Cancel or exit the Create New Card process.
- Click Add again to assign a card.
- Enter only the External Card Number.
- Click Save.
If the card already exists in the system, it will now be assigned without duplication errors.
Error Message:
Card Already Assigned : <card number and person assigned information>.
Cause:
This occurs when a card you are trying to assign is already assigned to another profile in BluSKY.
How To Fix:
- If the card should no longer be assigned to the previous person, edit their profile and remove the card on the Credentials tab.
- If the person's profile has been deleted with the card still assigned, you can search for "Active + Deleted" in the People Search, locate and select that deleted profile and use the "Undelete" button to temporarily restore the profile long enough to go in and remove the card from their profile, then you can delete that profile again.
- Once the card is removed from the previous profile you can assign it to a new profile.
Best Practices to Avoid Errors

If BluB0X uploaded your cards, never use the Create New Card button—just enter the External Card Number.

Only create a new card manually if it does not exist in the system, for example, if the card was provided by a different source.

If you are not sure if a card has been previously created, try to assign the card assuming it has been and do not use the Create New Card button. If BluSKY is unable to locate an existing card that matches the card number/facility code it will report that error and then you can repeat using the Create New Card button.

If you do have to create a card manually via the Create New Card button, care must be taken when selecting the Card Type. There are very similarly named card type options and it is important to select the correct one...DO NOT GUESS. Please reach out to BluB0X Support if you have any questions.
