Why Does My Reader Not Work on an EP1501?

Overview

There are several different ways a Reader can be wired and configured with an EP1501, depending if you are going to use RS485 communication for the extension boards or not.  By default, BluSKY configures the reader to  use RS485 communications for the extension boards.

Wiring One Reader and Using RS485 Communication.

This is the default configuration for BluSKY. This will allow you daisy chain multiple Mercury boards from the LP/EP1501. To use this configuration, one of the Reader ports will be configured for RS485 communications (TB2-RS485, TB3-CR1).

  1. Wire the Reader to TB3, not TB2.
    • Note: TB2 while being labeled as Reader 1 is also used for RS485 communications.
  2. Configure your Reader:
    1. Goto Setup-> System Setup-> Readers.
    2. Select your Reader, or create a new Reader if appropriate.
    3. Configure your Reader as you would normally, but select Reader Channel 1.
      • Note: This might seem wrong because you are using the third terminal block (TB3), but when the RS485 is going to be used, Mercury automatically switches the first Reader channel from TB2 to TB3, to be the first and only reader channel for this configuration.
  3. Verify that BluSKY is configured to use TB3 as the Reader Channel 1, this is the default configuration.
    1. Goto Setup-> System Setup-> Controller.
    2. Click the "More…" button.
    3. Scroll, if needed, to the "Controller to SIO Board Communications" section.
    4. Verify that the External Msp Driver Number is set to 1.
    5. Verify that the External Port is set to 1.
  4. Please remember to go to the Mercury Test Tool and sync the controller, so these changes are propagated to the LP/EP1501.

Wiring for Up to Two Readers

This setup will prevent you from using RS485 communication. This configuration is typically used if one LP/EP1501 is ONLY going to be used to control one portal.

  1. Wire the reader to TB2.
  2. Configure your Reader(s).
    1. Goto Setup-> System Setup-> Readers.
    2. Select your Reader, or create a new Reader if appropriate.
    3. Configure your Reader as you would normally, select Reader Channel 1 for the first Reader, Channel 2 for the second
  3. Configure BluSKY to use the TB2 as Reader Channel 1.
    1. Goto Setup-> System Setup-> Controller.
    2. Select the "More…" button.
    3. Scroll, if needed, to the "Controller to SIO Board Communications" section.
    4. Change the External Msp Driver Number to 0.
    5. Change the External Port to 3.

  4. Please remember to go to the Controller-Door-Floor Diagnostic tool and "Clear DB"m "Sync Controller" and "Sync Persons", so these changes are propagated to the LP/EP1501.
